Hi Allen, the best source is Stephen Wolinsky. (1991). Trances people live. Falls Village, CT: The Bramble Company. ISBN 0-9626184-2-X. You will also find a great deal of speculation about how beliefs are formed and propagated in the NLP literature. Dave

Hi Dave Your e-book and website are great! This weeks free hypnosis script is very timely! Just wondering if you have anything specifically on bereavement / grief. I am thinking of metaphors and scripts such as 'Catalogue of Magic' and 'Constant Rock'. I also really liked the journey metaphor you did at the Federation Conference last year. Any ideas? Cheers Liana

athletes mental blocks
From: dr carrie in 13-Aug-2011 05:13
wondering if you have a script, or if im able to make a script for my teen daughter who's a competitive cheerleader competing/tumbling on a spring floor. She tried high school cheer and fell doing a running roundoff double back handspring on a thin matt on a gym floor. Now she can sometimes do the handsprings on the spring floor, but many times stops at the beginning scared and falls on her tailbone, so is losing more and more confidence and falling like this more and more. She injured her bsck and neck and got a concussion from the injury. She had post concussion syndrome for many months. She loved tumbling and used to do 5 running handsprings in a row and round off backhandsprings to back tucks. But shes lost almost everyth now and is so sad bc she may have to quit cheerleading, which she lives for. What about hypnosis. I thought about healing energies and/or fear scripts, but not sure they are a real good fit?? We love hypnosis, have done hypnotherapy and been hypnotised at brian weiss seminars. it is wonderful.

Bipolar Disorder
From: Dave Mason in NZ 24-Jul-2011 22:25
Hi Gene, What you are doing sounds great. I think that using your skills to help the families of bipolar (manic-depressive) people is the right way to go. Working directly with bipolar people is not a good idea, and in many countries is illegal. Bipolar disorder is a serious and life threatening disease and all instances should be referred to a psychiatrist. However I think what you are doing, working with the families as part of a team, is an excellent initiative. You should consider keeping records of the changes seen in the families’ responses and publish your results. Dave

BiPolar disorder
From: Gene D. Collicutt in Lethbridge Alberta 24-Jul-2011 22:06
Iam running a course at the local college called new life skills for Bipolar families. It is designed to allow family members to learn physical and mental skills that they can use to ease the effects of bipolar "swings" that can be so devastating to the family unit. As clients sign up they will be informed that this course is in addition to their medication's and doctor, psychiatrist, psychologist visits, and they are not to consider this as a way of eliminating these important people. I will be teaching them progressive relaxation, three finger technique to quickly access this state, physiology, association, dissociation, breathing exercises, chunking down through emotions, altering self-talk, as well as level one EFT. My question is what experiences have you had with bipolar and what have you found helpfull. My training includes registered clinical hypnotherapist {ARCH}, certified master practitioner NLP. certified master practitioner Time line techniques, EFT advanced, and my wife is bipolar. Thank you for taking the time to look at this note.

stress garden script
From: margie in nanaimo, bc 14-Apr-2011 21:16
Here is my expanded version of the stress garden script. JULIE – Work Commitments Stress Script Worry Garden Stress Relief Script and as you are lying in there... relaxed... relaxing even more... your mind begins to wander ... to think of a summer day... a place outdoors... a place with trees and fields and water gently flowing... warm air... a tranquil place where you have nothing to do... nothing to think about... and yet... there always seems to be something that stops you from relaxing... isn't there? Worries, frustrations and concerns... and sometimes it seems like they never go away... and right now some of those worries for you are centred on your upcoming move to Vancouver and marketing your acupuncture practise in a new location and you know, there are times when you would just like to forget all your worries, frustrations and concerns…….. just forget them all, wave your wand, make them disappear and do something fun……… and really, when it comes down to it…… why can’t you …..just forget them ... why not ?... AND I wonder if you can imagine what your worries would look like? …….I mean if you were to take each worry or concern…… and imagine just thinking about it... imagine all your worries can be transformed into objects... material things... imagine what size and shape and colour each worry would be...would they be large or small……would they be brightly coloured or dull…..would they be moving or still……..just what would they look like (pause) and then imagine taking each one and putting them down on the ground...just dropping them all onto the ground…. And maybe you can hear the big thud some of them make as they hit the ground……or maybe some are just sort of floating gently down and landing on the ground…it doesn’t matter how they reach the ground……but there they are, all in a row….. and take time now to look at them... look at them as they lie there... and notice how each one is different... some of them are very large and glowing…..others might be tiny like an insect….and maybe others are just medium sized…..and maybe as you look at them….some of them make you want to look away as they make you feel a little sad……and maybe others are looking just a little innocent, wondering why you have been troubled about them……and others kind of look like a birthday present, beckoning you to open them up…..and maybe others right now, are even shrinking in size….since you first thought of them and now think about how you feel about them all... about how long you have had them...and maybe as you look at this row of things on the ground certain emotions arise……and that is OK……those things have been with you for awhile…..and its ok to feel something……. But then as the emotion fades…you are able to look at these things in a more detached way…..they are just things…..sitting on the ground……. and imagine now that you glance over to your right and see that someone has just prepared a little garden……it is neatly bordered with a little fence and as you glance at the good rich soil... ...the sun is shining……you feel the warmth on your skin…..and you feel a strong desire to get your hands deep into that warm rich soil ……..as you kneel at the edge of the garden…..you see tiny beautifully coloured butterflies flitting about ……there is a red-breasted robin in a tree nearby, quietly watching you and singing his lyrical song…..beckoning you to spend time in this garden And you decide that this garden is the perfect place to plant your worries…….and you begin to create little rows…..digging a hole in the warm soil for each one as you move along the row... see the size and shape of each hole as you dig... and see the first worry going in the hole... and as you glance back to that line of items on the ground, you realize that one has disappeared and you smile…..and you spend time filling up the hole in the ground with soil covering it up... burying that worry... smoothing the warm earth over the top…… the surface now smooth and unruffled…..and it is, as if, that worry never existed... And you continue to take each worry item from the ground….. and gently dig a little hole and bury each one... the little one next... the big bright one after that…..just relaxed and continuing to enjoy the beautiful sunshine……as you work in that garden…..digging big and little holes for every worry……covering up the holes gently and finally gently raking all the warm soft earth back and forth... until there is no trace that anything is there... just beautiful rich warm soil... ready for new plants and flowers to bloom And maybe you ask yourself...what is the opposite of worry? and you know that when you plant tiny little seeds……they eventually totally transform…….one minute they are tiny seeds and the next moment they are mature plants……all with the capacity of transformation…..and now allow those things under that soil that you planted begin to change... and imagine going back to the garden now and again... tending the soil... pulling up the weeds….watering and fertilizing occasionally….and after a while... you start to notice little green shoots appear... and those shoots begin to grow... and soon the whole garden is covered with little green shoots... and then as time goes by succulent green leaves appear... and all sorts of different plants are coming up……some tall and some small…..beautiful plants are coming up where those worries used to be... and as you continue to tend the garden……howing and watering and sometimes just spending time in the garden appreciating the beauty of a sunny day……those plants begin to bud and flourish... and then one special day you notice the beautiful array of flowers that have opened...every colour of the rainbow…..fuschia and burnt orange…..lavender and crimson…….and each plant is unique….some have multiple flowers and others have just a single blossom…….there are roses and daisies and beautiful orchids…….there are wild flowers that poke their little heads in between other plants…..the tall flowers sway in the breeze…..as other tiny plants hug the ground and spread in all directions…... and you realize the lesson of the garden……..that each worry has the inherent capability of transforming, just like plants…….and you can create transformation whenever you choose……..allowing yourself to let go of worries……transform them………and then see the fruits of transformation D and then as time passes you decide to revisit your little garden……..and you decide that it is the perfect day to pick some flowers to decorate your home and your office………as you walk among the rows of plants, breathing in and appreciating the beautiful aroma of flower scents……..kneeling over a beautiful crimson rose and smelling the heady perfume……….and you place each flower in a beautiful basket that you carry with you…….each flower more brilliantly coloured and beautiful than the previous one…….the flowers, like a rainbow filling the basket……..and you take a moment to set the basket down on the ground, filled to overflowing with flowers…..and you lie down in the grass, the warmth of the sun relaxing your body completely……feeling calm and peaceful….the beauty of the day filling your awareness……and as you glance over at the mellifluous rainbow of colour in your basket you decide to weave that colour into a quilt of happiness…..(long pause) and now time has passed…….and you decide to return to the garden….again you rake over the soil and smooth it out…..and plant new seeds…….this time seeds of hope and strength and forgetting…….and you imagine what kind of flowers will come up this time Nature is constantly reminding us of how things change ... of how as one thing decays it nourishes another... that peace, beauty, harmony and joy are just a seed planting away, at any moment in time, and things that seemed permanent always just fade away... to be replaced by something fresh, beautiful and new...

Weekly Script: Worry Garden Stress Relief
From: Jane Buckman in USA Arlington, Virginia 31-Mar-2011 15:30
Hi Dave, As I have said before, I am astounded with the quality of your work. So I thank you for your sharing. I have been a full time hypnotherapist (consulting hypnotist ala NGH) for 7 years and find that your work is broadening my horizon. My career has been in the Fine Arts - painting, exhibiting and teaching. I've always been interested in metaphors and often use them in my hypnotherapy sessions. Since ordering your scripts I find that I am using metaphors more and more and finding that it really enriches the sessions and the results. Thank you. So, I as I read your latest free weekly script I wondered if it would be beneficial or detrimental to add (shown in caps)in the 4th and 5th row: I wonder if you can imagine what your worries would look like? AND WHERE YOU ARE CARRYING THEM ON YOUR BODY? I mean if you were to take each worry, and think about it, not the thing you are worrying about... but the worry itself... imagine all your worries being converted into objects... like things... imagine what size and shape and colour each worry would be... and then imagine how it would be to line up all your worries... put them down on the ground... and just look at them... look at them as they lie there... and notice how each one is different... SOME MAY BE SQUARE …SOME ROUND…SOME SHARP… OR ROUGH…SOME MAY SEEM TO BE FLOATING AROUND …TOO HARD TO GET A HOLD OF. As far as using metaphors, I guess I just don't know how clear the client needs to be to process during the metaphor. I've always been a little leery of metaphors that make it sound too easy. For example: holding colored balloons and putting a worry into each one as you let the balloon float away. Thanks for any help/comments you may have on this. Regards, Jane Buckman

Stress Management
From: Dave Mason in NZ 23-Mar-2011 23:25
There are two ways of treating stress. One is to treat the symptoms; the other is deal with the original issues that are enabling the stress. To treat the symptoms you teach the client how to reduce their current stress levels and how to stop the stress building up in the future. Basically you teach them self hypnosis. Any of the self hypnosis or stress reduction scripts on the key-hypnosis.com site will be a good starting point for your case study. Getting back to the source of the stress requires non script approaches. You can recommend regression, metaphor modelling, core transformation, parts therapy or other hypnotic techniques to clear the original issue. |

Hypnotherapy
From: Gail gailholmewood@btinternet.com in England 24-Feb-2011 19:51
HI Dave, I am just coming to the end of my first year studying Counselling and part of the studies covered HYpnotherapy, your site has been so helpful along the way. Thank you. I have a client I am doing a case study on at the moment that has lost her confidence to drive her car. This started about five years ago. She actually retired from her job then as a Nursing Matron, so a lot of her confidence has gone since then, but she did say he husband is always very critical towards her and moans about her driving etc etc. So I feel there is a bit more going on here! So would just building up her confidence and self-esteem be the starting point? And what would be the most powerful scripts to use. Many Thanks Gail

Fear of Driving
From: dave mason in NZ 28-Feb-11 12:09
Hi Gail, This type of client can be quite tricky. There are many possible reasons why she has lost her confidence for driving. You need to talk to her extensively and find out what the big issues in her life have been. In general this class of client has had some traumatic event in childhood and has never resolved it. Then some event happened that caused her to question everything she knew about herself, really challenged her identity, made her question who she is, and that re-awakened the original fear. That fear is now transferred to driving, and if she is constantly getting criticised and put down it will transfer to other things as well, eventually. There is not really a script for this. What you need to do is to hypnotize her and do a regression session. Lead her back to the original incident. Then use Inner Child technique or Parts Therapy or something similar that you feel comfortable with. Once you have neutralised the old fear you then need another session to give her back her confidence. My self confidence and ego strengthening script should work for that. She has been driving for many years and it should be easy to get her back behind the wheel, so you can expect to get complete success with this client. Dave

Vaginismus
From: DM in NZ 02-Aug-2010 14:04
Vaginismus is the uncontrollable spasm of the woman’s internal muscles in the vagina. It is mostly a psychological problem and can usually be relieved by hypnotherapy. The underlying problem is either a belief that intercourse is dirty or forbidden, or a fear of pain from penetration. The treatment consists of a sympathetic interview with the woman, aiming to understand the origin of the beliefs. In most cases the source is negative messages from their mother about sex. In some cases the source is negative feelings from childhood associated with seeing others having intercourse, or experiencing sexual contact before being mentally mature enough to deal with it. The condition can also develop as a phobia. This happens when the woman has had satisfactory sex, experiences pain for some reason, and then begins to react to the thought of the possibility of further pain. Once the source has been identified direct suggestion hypnosis, guided visualization, metaphor therapy, regression or other standard hypnotherapy methods can be used to change the underlying feelings and beliefs. The method to use depends on the nature of the problem. These may also need to include some ego strengthening and confidence boosting if the condition has been a problem for a long time. After the woman has successfully experienced penetration without pain, the condition seldom returns.

Using an exerpt from your visualization site
From: sara.harper@fcps.edu in 30-Jul-2010 07:05
My name is Sara Harper, and I work for Fairfax County Public Schools (in Northern VA). We're writing summer curriculum, and FCPS would love the opportunity to use one of your lemon visualization exercise (http://www.hypknowsis.com/Visualization-Techniques/LV6-Guided-Visualisation-Exercises.php) in one of our Advanced Academic learning lessons. FCPS would distribute these learning lessons online to all teachers. Is there any way you could, or would be willing, to give us written permission to reference the use of your cite in our lessons? We need written permission so we don't violate any copyright rules. Thanks in advance for your help! I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sexual Dysfunction
From: Dave in Middle East 20-Jul-2010 05:26
Dear Dr.Mason, I suffer from sexual dysfunction. In fact my condition is similar to the case study on your website, where after several failed attempts, I've lost self-confidence, and was in denial. However following the breakup of my marriage, I sought medical help. The tests show there is nothing wrong with me physically. I even recorded your hypnotherapy script, and tried it. Unfortunately, I didn't feel that I was hypnotizing myself. I'm also surprised that while I've been put on a course of Cialis for 3 months, hypnosis was not recommended. Do you perform hypnosis using skype? I would gladly make an appointment. Or what else can I do to improve my self-hypnosis? Thank You for your time.

When to use Screeds
From: Dave Mason in 20-Jul-2010 07:48
Hi Anthony, When not to use scripts Scripts and screeds are useful but have severe limitations. For a start it is obvious to the client when the therapist is speaking freely and when the therapist is reading a script. Very few people can read aloud and make it sound natural. If you are reading a script then you are not watching the client: the therapist needs to be acutely aware of the client's reactions at all times. A script is a fixed approach. It assumes that the client is going to be passive and take no part in the session. This is a poor approach to therapy. The client is actually signalling all the time, and the therapist needs to respond to these signals. This means that the therapist has to be flexible with every client. In addition, sometimes clients will react unpredictably to words, ideas or images in the script and the therapist has to be ready to deal with whatever comes up. If the therapist is relying on a script then the session will terminate abruptly if there is an abreaction, or a spontaneous regression. A skilled therapist will switch to a different technique and follow wherever the client leads, smoothly blending different techniques as required. Similarly a skilled therapist will be comfortable interacting with the client via ideomotor signals, or direct speech or in guided metaphor. Scripts cannot deal with that sort of procedure. Hypnotherapy screeds are a starting point, not the end result. They should be regarded as representing the minimum level of therapy skill: an experienced hypnotherapist should be able to include Cognitive Modelling, Behavioural Training, Metaphor Therapy, Regression and many other non-scripted techniques in any session. Every client is different. Every client has a unique problem caused by a unique set of circumstances. You cannot possibly have a screed to fit every situation. The danger is that relying on a set of scripts means that every client is then fitted to the available screeds. 'To the man who has only a hammer, everything looks like a nail'. Dave
